Language

Each of our destinations has its own local language, and in some cases, local dialect. Most employees in the tourist industry will speak fair to good English. However, be prepared to be patient and use a lot of sign language if trying to communicate with locals.

Dress Code

Lightweight summer clothing is suitable for most of the year, but sweaters or jackets may be needed for the winter months, especially in the evenings.

However, care should be taken not to give offence by wearing clothing which may be considered inapproporiate, especially in Muslim countries or during religious festivals.

At the pool or on the beaches, trunks, swim-suits and bikinis are quite acceptable.

Good quality sunglasses are advised, and photo- chromatic lenses for those who wear spectacles. Hats or some protection for the head are advisable when in direct sunlight.

Currency

In Thailand, you will find the Thai Bhat. In Indonesia the Rupiah. In Malaysia the Rinngit and in Singapore the Singapore Dollar. In Vietnam expect the Dong and in the Maldives, the Rufiyaa. In most place you can exchange or even pay in US Dollars.

Credits Cards

American Express, Diners Club, Visa, MasterCard, etc are generally accepted in the main hotels and larger shops but some retailers offer better bargains for cash.

Manners

Religion is a very serious matter in the Far East, whether your are in a Buddhist or Muslim country. The general tips are not to sit in such a way that the soles of your feet are pointing at another person. During Ramadan, please do not eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours. Do not take photographs of military installations. Never drink alcohol in public. Please respect the privacy of the local residents and request their permission before taking photographs
